RAZORBLADE CITY OUT ON DVD TODAY!

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Don’t worry; you won’t need an Urban Dictionary to decipher this urban flick. Director Richard Johnson makes sure you understand every piece of slang and clearly defines the who’s who of Razorblade City.

From the opening scene we witness street hustlers, crooked cops, and cracked heads. Razorblade City is a wild place! The plot centers around a drug dealer, “Kingston”, that runs into trouble with two of Razorblade City’s most notorious gangsters, King Leroy & Machine Gun Milton.  After being framed for the murders of the gangsters’ loved ones, Kingston tries to lay low but it becomes impossible in a city of crime.

Even the women in Razorblade City are packing heat!  This movie took a twist from other urban films by introducing us to Trix and Flix – two sisters that were partners in crime with Kingston. With Kingston on the run and two people dead, it sets off a frenzy throughout the town.

Out of all the movies I’ve seen recently, this one introduced me to the most interesting characters. And it actually pulled off keeping my attention and keeping me on track with multiple characters and storylines.

This movie serves as a cautionary tale that “anything, absolutely anything can happen in Razorblade City.”

Review of the Urban Action film Razorblade City!

Friday, November 5th, 2010

As reality television continues to flood the airwaves, Razorblade City appears to offer a real life look inside a shoot em’ up gangster documentary. The soundtrack reflects words of wisdom about living a hard core life on the streets, and the flow of the music and its message are fluid throughout the film. I absolutely found entertainment in the character’s names like Fat Boys, Fly Ronnie Jones, King Leroy, Trix and Flix, Bling Bling and good ole Machine Gun Milton.

So the saying goes, it takes a village. Well, when one big time drug dealer’s son is accidentally shot in the head, you can bet someone is going to pay. There is this innate human nature to seek revenge when a loved one is hurt, and the strength behind these emotions are forceful. Our blood boils, our minds race with scenarios and ideas to impend harm. Bloodshed tears result in additional murders, like a domino effect on death.

Although this film has a typical setting of the low income jigsaw puzzle of the ghetto; curiosity creeps in with an invitation to watch cops try to unfold a wrinkled cover up of the initial killing. Cops play the game of befriending tattlers that are really just accomplices in this juncture. As the story line gets heated, I was tempted to shout out to the players like a fan at a sports event.  I had flashbacks of Boys n the Hood and New Jack City, but the cinematography of Razoblade was non-traditional and up close on many of the scenes. It was almost like I felt I was in the room or on the streets trying to survive the mayhem myself and not get caught.

If you enjoy the reckless toting guns, drugs and a whole lotta hip hop chatter; don’t miss out on Razoblade City. Maverick Entertainment always delivers a variety of movies, with a genre to meet everyone’s interest. Look out for more films coming your way soon, and enjoy a first look at some of the next big actors and actresses as they get their first break on the big screen with Maverick!

Ex$pendable- One Plan, Too Many Players!

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Don’t be snitchin!  That’s the moral of the story in Ex$pendable, Frank Jackson and Eric Lowe’s extremely dense urban crime epic.

By giving me a copy of the movie to write about, Maverick Entertainment Group has challenged me with an extremely dense storyline, delving into the culture of the Philadelphia Police Department’s informant system.  Two gang-banging brothers want in on a rival crime lord’s gun cache and are more than happy to start making trouble in his neighborhood.  Unfortunately, one brother’s wife happens to be an informant: a clear impetus for all hell to break loose in Philly’s seamy underbelly.  A lot of violence and no free trip to Bel-Air for anyone who gets into any little fight.

Ex$pendable is available on DVD October 12!  Buy it, Rent it, Queue it up!

The 70% Club, Are You A Member?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

The 70% Club was an all inclusive look within the current dating climate for black women. I must admit the film gave a very truthful, accurate look into several very specific situations within the black community as far as dating goes.

What I appreciated was there were various couples all in different stages of the dating game. Even though the 70% Club refers to the number of African American women who are not in committed relationships, the film showed a nice balance between the black woman being desired and the black woman desiring others. I think that is very important to show. Just because many of us are alone, doesn’t mean we are not desired. I also appreciated the fact that the film displayed the different perspectives of being in a committed relationship. Some women truly believe it is ok to be with a man even if she is not the only woman he is dating as long as he is exclusive to the two of them. The film explores at what point it is ok to be single rather than be with a man that is not willing to be faithful or exclusive. Neither view is wrong; it is just a matter of preference. Oftentimes we spend so much time being judgmental and don’t consider what it must feel like to be alone and without a companion to enjoy life with. Everyone deserves somebody. Whether or not being the side-chick qualifies one for the 30% club is still a mystery to me.

This film is very honest, and courageous. It attacks difficult relationship issues such as divorce, infidelity, and deceit. Ultimately, relationships are about what you’re willing to give and what you’re willing to take to keep the other person. At some point, I believe everyone would like to be a part of the 30% club but there just isn’t room for everybody. The 70% Club is a club I’m in right now, but after seeing this film, I realize I’d rather be here than be in 30% with someone who just isn’t worthy.

I received The 70% Club for review from Maverick Entertainment Group. The 70% Club is available everywhere on DVD, Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up!

A note from the filmmaker of Rent A Car

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Initially, I sat in my office debating what I could shoot a film about.  I wanted to do something really funny and was trying to find a life experience that I could make a story out of.  Rent A Car was the answer!

I had worked in the rental car industry for 8 years prior to making this film and had seen everything; from customers literally running away with our cars, to their unbelievable explanations of damage to them.  In addition, I had eight year’s worth of notes on all of these zany occurrences compiled in a stack that I could use for story ideas for my film.

To help tie together a sequence of hilarious episodes stemming form my workdays, I reached out to a comedian that I had actually met while working in the rental car business.  His name … Shawn Harris (P. Diddy Presents the Bad Boys of Comedy).   This guy was so funny that when we talked in person, I just had to work with him and luckily he agreed.   In fact, the very first night we shot two scenes at Shawn’s house!  We thought the scenes would take about 5 hours, but when the other comedians and beautiful female actresses hired for the shoot arrived, things quickly changed.  Shawn immediately changed our simple “wings and fries” budget for the night into Chinese food for everyone!

We didn’t leave Shawn’s house until 6 am the next morning and yes, we did manage to shoot our two scenes.  But, just as we overspent on Chinese food that one night, we overspent ourselves trying to get into the crazy characters from Rent A Car.

We had a great cast and crew that really worked hard and knew their job. Everyone knew how to work and play hard too. There are so many stories with Shawn Harris and Rodney “Lil’Brough” Yarborough (BET Comic View comedian), that would take a whole week to run through!  Just know there were many “YO Momma” jokes and plenty of making fun of anyone that forgot any of their lines on set. This was one of the best experiences I have had in my life, and others in the movie have said the same. I feel that our good time shows in our movie and you will really love it if you are looking for action and comedy mixed in one.  Rent A Car is the way to go!  Buy it, Rent it, and Queue it up!  Available everywhere on DVD July 13th!

Three Families, Two Lovers, One War! Review of A Gangland Love Story

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

A Gangland Love Story is somewhat of a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. I liked the film but this is the best way to describe it. Here we have a young, beautiful girl who falls in love with a man who is a part of an empire her brother despises. Of course she can’t live without him. She has to have him and knowing she shouldn’t have him makes him even more desirable. Reagan Gomez offers an excellent performance. I’ve always been a fan of her work and I am especially happy to see her back at work again.  Her brother, Paul, played by Gary Anthony Sturgis, was an over-protective brother. The part was a bit extreme but I found Sturgis’ performance to be very honest and believable.

What I can appreciate most about the film was that it was written fairly well. I definitely began to care about the characters. I wanted Julia to find love and not give him up just because her brother didn’t want her dating. I also loved loved loved that Romano didn’t let Paul scare him off. I’m sorry but men barely pay for dinner nowadays, let alone risk their life to be with a woman!

Although the spoken word poetry seemed a little forced, I could appreciate that the film had an even balance of action, roughness, and sensitivity. It wasn’t a chick flick but it wasn’t a gang movie either. There was something in the film for everyone and ultimately, the characters truly earned their destiny in this film.

While Gangland did not have the poetic language Romeo and Juliet used, it has the hipness and modernization that makes the film completely relatable. I can appreciate the work writer/director Greg Carter invested in this project.

I received A Gangland Love Story for review from Maverick Entertainment Group.  The film is available OnDemand starting 6/22 and will be out on DVD 7/20!  Queue up your copy today!
