Maverick Entertainment Group Incorporated (MEG) announces the release of Rent A Car streeting on July 13, 2010. The wild antics that go on at this Rent A Car business will definitely tickle your funny bone. Directors Lakisha Lemons and Marcus Jones know how to tackle comedy and with the help of a great cast this laugh out loud film is an insane ride beginning to end. The hilarious story of a rental car business owner named ‘D-Stacks’ and his dedicated, but sometimes demented, employees. Business is booming and even ‘Little Man’ is taking his job as “Manager” seriously, until one fateful day when big-shot ‘Boogie White’ rents a car and mistakenly returns it with $10,000 dollars in the trunk. Now ‘D-Stacks’ has only 72 hours to replace the money. Lucky for him, one of his employees is a talented musician, but will his single be amazing enough to make $10,000 in 72 hours? Maybe not, but with friends, hookups, and a killer hood concert, it just might.

The 70% Club was an all inclusive look within the current dating climate for black women. I must admit the film gave a very truthful, accurate look into several very specific situations within the black community as far as dating goes.
What I appreciated was there were various couples all in different stages of the dating game. Even though the 70% Club refers to the number of African American women who are not in committed relationships, the film showed a nice balance between the black woman being desired and the black woman desiring others. I think that is very important to show. Just because many of us are alone, doesn’t mean we are not desired. I also appreciated the fact that the film displayed the different perspectives of being in a committed relationship. Some women truly believe it is ok to be with a man even if she is not the only woman he is dating as long as he is exclusive to the two of them. The film explores at what point it is ok to be single rather than be with a man that is not willing to be faithful or exclusive. Ne
ither view is wrong; it is just a matter of preference. Oftentimes we spend so much time being judgmental and don’t consider what it must feel like to be alone and without a companion to enjoy life with. Everyone deserves somebody. Whether or not being the side-chick qualifies one for the 30% club is still a mystery to me.
This film is very honest, and courageous. It attacks difficult relationship issues such as divorce, infidelity, and deceit. Ultimately, relationships are about what you’re willing to give and what you’re willing to take to keep the other person. At some point, I believe everyone would like to be a part of the 30% club but there just isn’t room for everybody. The 70% Club is a club I’m in right now, but after seeing this film, I realize I’d rather be here than be in 30% with someone who just isn’t worthy.
I received The 70% Club for review from Maverick Entertainment Group. The 70% Club is available everywhere on DVD, Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up!

Initially, I sat in my office debating what I could shoot a film about. I wanted to do something really funny and was trying to find a life experience that I could make a story out of. Rent A Car was the answer!
I had worked in the rental car industry for 8 years prior to making this film and had seen everything; from customers literally running away with our cars, to their unbelievable explanations of damage to them. In addition, I had eight year’s worth of notes on all of these zany occurrences compiled in a stack that I could use for story ideas for my film.
To help tie together a sequence of hilarious episodes stemming form my workdays, I reached out to a comedian that I had actually met while working in the rental car business. His name … Shawn Harris (P. Diddy Presents the Bad Boys of Comedy). This guy was so funny that when we talked in person, I just had to work with him and luckily he agreed. In fact, the very first night we shot two scenes at Shawn’s house! We thought the scenes would take about 5 hours, but when the other comedians and beautiful female actresses hired for the shoot arrived, things quickly changed. Shawn immediately changed our simple “wings and fries” budget for the night into Chinese food for everyone!
We didn’t leave Shawn’s house until 6 am the next morning and yes, we did manage to shoot our two scenes. But, just as we overspent on Chinese food that one night, we overspent ourselves trying to get into the crazy characters from Rent A Car.
We had a great cast and crew that really worked hard and knew their job. Everyone knew how to work and play hard too. There are so many stories with Shawn Harris and Rodney “Lil’Brough” Yarborough (BET Comic View comedian), that would take a whole week to run through! Just know there were many “YO Momma” jokes and plenty of making fun of anyone that forgot any of their lines on set. This was one of the best experiences I have had in my life, and others in the movie have said the same. I feel that our good time shows in our movie and you will really love it if you are looking for action and comedy mixed in one. Rent A Car is the way to go! Buy it, Rent it, and Queue it up! Available everywhere on DVD July 13th!

A Gangland Love Story is somewhat of a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. I liked the film but this is the best way to describe it. Here we have a young, beautiful girl who falls in love with a man who is a part of an empire her brother despises. Of course she can’t live without him. She has to have him and knowing she shouldn’t have him makes him
even more desirable. Reagan Gomez offers an excellent performance. I’ve always been a fan of her work and I am especially happy to see her back at work again. Her brother, Paul, played by Gary Anthony Sturgis, was an over-protective brother. The part was a bit extreme but I found Sturgis’ performance to be very honest and believable.
What I can appreciate most about the film was that it was written fairly well. I definitely began to care about the characters. I wanted Julia to find love and not give him up just because her brother didn’t want her dating. I also loved loved loved that Romano didn’t let Paul scare him off. I’m sorry but men barely pay for dinner nowadays, let alone risk their life to be with a woman!
Although the spoken word poetry seemed a little forced, I could appreciate that the film had an even balance of action, roughness, and sensitivity. It wasn’t a chick flick but it wasn’t a gang movie either. There was something in the film for everyone and ultimately, the characters truly earned their destiny in this film.
While Gangland did not have the poetic language Romeo and Juliet used, it has the hipness and modernization that makes the film completely relatable. I can appreciate the work writer/director Greg Carter invested in this project.
I received A Gangland Love Story for review from Maverick Entertainment Group. The film is available OnDemand starting 6/22 and will be out on DVD 7/20! Queue up your copy today!

Reflections of a Black Independent Filmmaker DVD sales in the age of Internet and Blu-Ray Doom and Gloom. That’s was the pervasive feeling at the last AFM in Santa Monica. As someone who made my small urban movies on the fringe, I never really felt the pressure as most of my mainstream counterparts. The urban genre always had a built in audience, and not just black people as you would think. Because the African-American audience and to a large part the “Hip-Hop” generation is normally under represented as far as selections at the multi-plex, home video has always been fertile ground for black filmmakers. In fact is been something we depended on.
Under attack. The film business is now on the same precipice, that the music industry found itself on 10 years ago. Shifting attitudes about the delivery systems meant the end of the CD Album as viable way to monetize the music business. The first to be hit was the small independent record labels, followed by the big record companies. One by one the giants continue to fall. This change is now being seen in the DVD market.
Because of bandwidth issues and problems with uniform codec standards with video software, video delivery via the internet was always difficult. Thus protecting DVD sales from the shifting attitudes about delivery until now. Mobile media (ipods, laptops, cell phones) and generation of internet savvy users is changing everything. Ultimately, Redbox, Blockbuster, Hollywood video are in trouble. And no, this is not a shift in format preference. ie …VHS to DVD or DVD to Blu-Ray. It won’t matter if your program is presented in HD or not. This added to the glut independent features, makes it a buyers market. Think about it. You got independent features out there shot for 1-3 million dollars for distributors to cherry pick from. And even those titles they buy for pennies on the dollar. Advances for 30-40K are now more common place, or in most cases, no advance at all.
What can you do? First, embrace the technology. Digital filmmaking changed independent filmmaking forever. So, if you haven’t used the technology, you should it as a means to push your production cost as low as possible. The cheaper your film the less money you have to recoup for your investors. Which translates to more choices when deciding on a distributor. Two, include the DVD marketing money in you budget. The days of the studio financing the marketing campaign for the DVD of your film were generally a certainty if they decided to distribute your film. But, with the economy being what it is and the DVD market shrinking, the only way to guarantee a solid distribution deal, and again have a lot of options, is to come to the table with your own marketing money. In fact most dirstrib’s will give better backend percentages for your film and you’ll take the aspect of “creative accounting” by the distributor out of the equation. Lastly, don’t skimp on the DVD bonus material and extras. When people rent or purchase DVD’s, they want that extra value. Independent films which are still found primarily on DVD and not Blu-Ray. Studio’s mainly put bonus material on their Blu-Ray discs in order to drive those sales of the home video releases of their theatrical release. Bonus material (commentaries, behind the scenes, stills, music videos) will help convince the cost conscience consumers who are seeking value to purchase or rent your DVD.Ultimately, planning is your best tool. I hope this helps. (Original post on ScriptShark)

In the beginning of Rent-A-Car, a man digs gobs of messy fried chicken out of a box of Fruit Loops.
Really, this would be a perfect place to stop the review as it’s all you need to
know about this upcoming Maverick Entertainment Group release, which recently landed on my desk. However, I’m going to elaborate more on this fine film anyway.
Li’l Man (the aforementioned whom keeps his chicken in the cereal box) and D-Stacks realize that their days of randomly hocking bootleg DVDs on the streets are numbered when the local crime lord/record producer starts unleashing his own brand of copyright enforcement that the RIAA can only have naughty dreams about. They were apparently extremely good at the bootleg trade, considering they landed a Rent-A-Ride overnight. Of course, this only delays the wrath of our local insane record producer as he leaves a big wad of his own ill-gotten gains in a rented car that just happens to go AWOL, and then gives Li’l Man and D-Stack an ultimatum to get the cash back or face less-than-pleasant consequences.
Throughout this ordeal, our heroic duo deals with delinquent renters, an up-and-coming rapper, and an ex-convict who’s mind, by and large, never left the penitentiary.
It’s a perverse, outrageous undertaking from beginning to end and will be sure to keep you in stitches. Rent-A-Car comes out on DVD on July 13, 2010. Rent it, buy it or queue it. Word!

About half way through Gang Girl, I was thinking… WHERE IS THE SUBSTANCE in this film?! It can’t be just beating and killing and guns and shooting. This can’t be life…for anybody!
I still wonder if that could be life for somebody. It pains me to think that someone can or has lived the life of Gang Girl. This film takes us on a journey inside the mind of a semi-serial killer who somehow managed to make it out a life of pain and heartache to tell her story. It gives us the opportunity to see how guilt may be more of a punishment than prison.
The message was a good one. It was good to see the growth in the main
character, played by Anissa Chalmbers. It was good to see her go from being innocent, to a vengeful murderer, to being a saved woman trying to help a youngster. The beauty in a young person going to jail is that they get to be around older people who traded their childhood for crimes. Sometimes someone else’s experiences can be enough.
I can’t say I fell in love with any of the actors. I feel like they took the script for face value, rather than digging deep. Every criminal has a story. Every person who does a bad thing felt they had a good reason for doing it. The acting was soooo heavy. Everybody was performing like they were up for the Academy Award or something. Every role just doesn’t require so much weight. I enjoy more complex performances.
I found myself reading the credits simply because I didn’t want to stop listening to the song, “Open,” by Daun-Te. It was so simple and beautiful. It complimented the film very well.
Overall, I enjoyed the film. Initially I couldn’t find interest in it because of all of the killing and violence, but I realized that in order for the story to be told, we had to be taken through all the violence to get to the wonderful outcome. And the extremities of it all (the grittiness of the killing) is what really makes it plain that Jesus Christ will forgive you for anything. It’s easy to believe He’ll forgive you for robbing the candy store, but it’s a little more difficult to believe He can forgive murder. But He forgives all and not everyone knows that. That’s a message worth sharing.
I received Gang Girl for review from Maverick Entertainment Group. Gang Girl is out on DVD everywhere March 23rd. Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up!
