Prostitutes? Stalkers? Hallucinations of a cockney accented man always trying to give you food? Maverick Entertainment Group exposed me to such wild matters when they gave me a copy of Date For Hire to write about.
Date For Hire is, at its heart, a tale of three people living on the fringes of society. It covers a day in the life of a bartender and his two assistants as
one struggles with a lack of skill in wooing the ladies, another with far too much skill and an unexpected baby on the way, and the third so bereaved of any kind of ideas that he sets out to create the alcoholic beverage equivalent of LSD!
In many ways, it’s like Kevin Smith’s classic indie film breakout, Clerks, except it’s much more trippy. The movie is not constrained by much consistency and is a better piece of work for it. Prepare to be assaulted with every random thing under the sun that filmmaker Lee Cummings can possibly throw at you. It makes a contrast with the film’s mundane backdrop.
Date For Hire is available on DVD September 21, 2010. Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up today!

This week I’m blogging about an interesting DVD thriller: Cult, which I received from Maverick Entertainment Group. The movie possessed some great qualities: it had artistic sense of direction, a pretty good soundtrack, and definitely a unique plot. This Independent horror film also had some star power; Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow, 8 Mile, Crossroads) and, Rachel Miner (“Californication”, The Black Dahlia).
The movie starts out with narration of a tragic event that took
place in ancient China, accompanied by Chinese oil paintings that mimic the story. I loved the creative opening, and the fact that it lays the groundwork for the story to unfold. The tragic event surrounds a jade amulet that becomes a source of power in a modern day cult. Then, years later after a mass sacrificing in the cult’s church, a team of students join together to do research on the twisted events.
The clever dialogue and back stories make the characters “real” and believable. There are underlying relationship issues between Cassandra (Taryn Manning) and her boyfriend (Glenn Dunk); Alex (Joel Michaely), the team mascot for “The Bears”, surprisingly has public speaking insecurities; and Mindy (Rachel Miner) has a distant relationship with her dad, who is masking the truth behind her mother’s early demise.
I’m totally impressed by the cast and director of the movie Cult. It was not a jump out of your pants horror flick, but a dark psychological journey into the world of a warped cult. There was still a bloody show, for those of you who seek that kinda thing, but the movie in its entirety was less gruesome then it was mysterious and adventuresome. Cult is available on Amazon and at Blockbuster or check it out on YouTube!!

Can you put a price on love? What is more unholy than sacrificing the wealth of your pride? If you can’t turn back the clock, can you move forward and create your destiny? Desdemona is a Mexican romance, that’s edgy and ethically on the borderline of sinful. Also did I mention it’s loosely based on the Shakespearean play Othello?
The main characters are two brothers, who had it rough growing up, not un-like many street kids in their desolate hometown. As
adults they care for their ailing Father, and upon his passing want to show respect with a proper burial. Unfortunately, the funeral director has a costly price tag for their request, and now they have to create a seamless crime that’s tailored from a sketchy past.
One of the brothers fell in love with a girl named Desdemona during their childhood years, but they lost touch during their grade school years. She ends up marrying a rich businessman, but becomes a very lonely woman in his corporate world. The brothers’ decide to kidnap Desdemona and ask for a handsome ransom to cover the burial of their Father; the plan is a catch 22 between wanting to do the right thing the wrong way. The husband doesn’t seem too anxious to respond to the outreach for the return of his wife, so Desdemona expresses signs of hopelessness and despair at the realization her husband doesn’t care. What’s a girl to do? Now the one brother that fell so madly and deeply in love with her is a murderer; while the other brother is keeping close watch with his hands all over Desdemona. Shall I mention that her name means “of the devil,” like a bad seed yet alluring and deceptive?
There is something strangely intimate about the beauty in Desdemona’s eyes, as she lies tied up awaiting the outcome of her release. Breathe.
It’s interesting how the movie moves along with the initial setting a Church confession following scenes of flashbacks to create the entire film. Not a bad attempt to claim redemption on a life plotted through survival. If you liked watching Taken or Law Abiding Citizen, Desdemona is right up there with betrayal amongst loved ones and questionable circumstances of good vs. evil. Even the music beds are likeable, as the scenes were engaging and kept you wanting more from the characters.
I received Desdemona: A Love Story for review by Maverick Entertainment Group. The film will be available on DVD everywhere August 31st! Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up!

Hey, man. I heard there was this movie with some killer weed. And then I found it because Maverick Entertainment Group sent me this copy of Kush to write about. It gave me such a great buzz!
So, like, this dealer Dusty has been dealing out the high times since before I could remember anything. He’s making money off it, although all those ‘higher-up’ dealer guys aren’t as down with the weed and are starting to get into cocaine, the white stuff. His partner is some guy’s kid who’s really eager to be selling the green, but he gets so excited and angry about everything, and thinks Dusty is deliberately holding him back from the big money. He should probably calm down with some pot rather than go and kidnap some guy’s brother or something; it’s just, like, my opinion, man.
Kush is available now. Buy it, Rent it or Queue it up now, or maybe, later.

Sometimes you just find yourself mad as hell and, well, you know the rest. In the end, it boils down to a burning, primal desire to pummel something, or preferably, someone. So, when Maverick Entertainment Group sent me a copy of Circle of Fury to write about, an itch was very much scratched.
Johnny has returned from a traumatic tour of duty in Iraq to find himself a homeless beggar on the streets of his hometown, New York City. Luckily, he soon gets taken under the wing of his childhood friend Tariq, who has made a fortune through arranging fights that are only bet on by five random bystanders and somebody’s grandmother. Tariq shows Johnny the ropes and hands him a gym to run.
Unfortunately, Tariq’s also a local luminary of the criminal underworld, and uses the gym as a staging ground for his elicit drug business (I guess Granny’s Bingo winnings just weren’t enough to keep Tariq rolling). Johnny, content with running a gym which focuses on fitness and martial arts training, takes exception to Tariq’s extralegal side and, needless to say, a bit of bad blood is created between these one-time chums.
Asses will be kicked, heads will be smashed through various barriers and a good pulse-pounding time will be had by all. Maverick Entertainment Group is releasing Circle of Fury on September 14, 2010. Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up!
