CSI Star Gary Dourdan in new action film FIRE!

Friday, October 1st, 2010

I’m back again with a new review of another one of Maverick Entertainment’s upcoming releases Fire.  The movie is shot on location in Berlin, Germany! It involves political scandals, terrorists, bombs, and a bulging briefcase full of money.

The film was shot amazingly well; comparable to any film you’d see in theaters. Not to mention the all-star cast; Gary Dourdan (Phil) who starred in ‘CSI’ and Cosma Shiva Hagen (Nicole) who was in Speed Racer.  Oh, I almost forgot, she was also a cover model for Playboy in Germany. Not too shabby, right? There are some great special effects, explosions, and car chases too.

It’s just another day for Phil and his wife Eve, who have just entered their neighborhood bank in hopes of being approved for a loan that will help them buy their dream home.  Little does Phil know he’s about to become deeply entangled in a deranged political plot to ambush the city of Berlin. Terrorists have planned a horrific explosion, which will send the citizens into a fearful terrorist stricken frenzy. Citizens will be left vulnerable and afraid and Berlin will be looking to vote for a leader who can put a stop to terrorism. It’s up to Phil and Nicole, a local news reporter, to save the life of Phil’s beloved wife and the lives of thousands of German citizens.

Fire is available on DVD October 5th, but check it out on iNDemand (Comcast) starting October 1st!!  See ya next time!

Killing Down – Sometimes Paranoia is a Good Thing

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Steven Down always feels like somebody’s watching him, and Killing Down, the latest film that Maverick Entertainment has sent to me to write about, delivers a detailed chronicle of a man traumatized by war and all of the conspiracies committed therein.

Steven was a simple spook, a US Army spy who had infiltrated a collective farm full of idealistic American college students, deep in the Nicaraguan jungle.  But a couple of unidentified Nicaraguan guerillas were up to no good and started making trouble in his neighborhood, leaving him a hyper-paranoid mercenary when the smoke cleared.  On his latest job, Steven finds a mysterious man which may connect back to that fateful moment in the jungle.  Will he be able to avenge his past?

Killing Down is available now.  Buy it, rent it, or queue it up!

Review of the comedy film Date for Hire!

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Prostitutes?  Stalkers?  Hallucinations of a cockney accented man always trying to give you food?  Maverick Entertainment Group exposed me to such wild matters when they gave me a copy of Date For Hire to write about.

Date For Hire is, at its heart, a tale of three people living on the fringes of society.  It covers a day in the life of a bartender and his two assistants as one struggles with a lack of skill in wooing the ladies, another with far too much skill and an unexpected baby on the way, and the third so bereaved of any kind of ideas that he sets out to create the alcoholic beverage equivalent of LSD!

In many ways, it’s like Kevin Smith’s classic indie film breakout, Clerks, except it’s much more trippy.  The movie is not constrained by much consistency and is a better piece of work for it.  Prepare to be assaulted with every random thing under the sun that filmmaker Lee Cummings can possibly throw at you.  It makes a contrast with the film’s mundane backdrop.

Date For Hire is available on DVD September 21, 2010.  Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up today!

Shoot First, Ask Questions Later.

The wild wild west meets modern day Mexico in the movie Border Town. I received a copy of the film, from Maverick Entertainment, to review; and was pleasantly surprised.  Mark Joy leads the film, as a father seeking revenge for the kidnapping of his daughter. This persistent, gun toting, “gringo” will stop at nothing to get his little girl back from the human trafficking ring she’s been forced into.

The film had me rooting for Vincent (Mark Joy) from beginning to end. You are hoping for the best for his daughter but expecting the worse, all before her character is even introduced.  Then, Director Chris Allen Williams lets us peer into the high priced, covered up world of human trafficking; as the search for Vincent’s missing daughter continues.

Over all, Border Town had great action scenes, a lot of fire power, and seductive leading ladies; Linda Rodriguez and Joy Glass. The big draw for me is that the villainous character wasn’t nearly as “badass” as the good guy.  I also enjoyed the classic high noon shoot out that concludes the movie. Although it is apparent the film was shot on a low budget, the mood was high, and the actors carried there roles consisted throughout the film.  Border Town is available everywhere!  Buy it, Rent it, or Queue it up today!

Ex$pendable- One Plan, Too Many Players!

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Don’t be snitchin!  That’s the moral of the story in Ex$pendable, Frank Jackson and Eric Lowe’s extremely dense urban crime epic.

By giving me a copy of the movie to write about, Maverick Entertainment Group has challenged me with an extremely dense storyline, delving into the culture of the Philadelphia Police Department’s informant system.  Two gang-banging brothers want in on a rival crime lord’s gun cache and are more than happy to start making trouble in his neighborhood.  Unfortunately, one brother’s wife happens to be an informant: a clear impetus for all hell to break loose in Philly’s seamy underbelly.  A lot of violence and no free trip to Bel-Air for anyone who gets into any little fight.

Ex$pendable is available on DVD October 12!  Buy it, Rent it, Queue it up!

A Lost Treasure, an Epic Adventure, and some Killer Skeleton Warriors!!

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Where da gold at?  This question is asked in Army of the Dead, another fine film that Maverick Entertainment Group has given me a copy of to write about.

In 1590, Spanish conquistadors led by Vasco de Gama landed in Mexico searching for El Dorado, the fabled City of Gold.  What they found was a Native American curse which turned them into the eternal walking dead.  410 years later, a professor has taken his students out for an archaeological dig, as he needs unwitting patsies to help him with his rather unhealthy obsession of finding the gold for himself.  Unfortunately for our hapless academics, when they find the gold they trip up the curse and discover the conquistador skeletons kept their vocal chords and have a newfound fascination with killing things.

This movie is a good old fashioned by-the-numbers undead romp.  Lots of tense scenes of those crazy kids being outnumbered by armies of darkness and carnage abound.  It’s a great choice for people who love explosions and have a special thing for the color red.

Army of the Dead is available on iTunes! Check out the adventure today!
