Following in the inspiring tradition of Norma Rae and
Erin Brockovich, Bitter Sweat gives viewers a vivid look at a simple
people against fighting overwhelming odds for better working
conditions.
Set in a Puerto Rico fish-cleaning factory, the film
focuses on a group of female workers struggling to hold onto their jobs as
massive layoffs and heated protests swirl around them. The volatile
atmosphere culminates when their boss is found murdered one morning. As
the investigation goes on and each of the women is questioned, the strain
puts their friendship to the ultimate test.
Expertly
combining personal relationships with suspense, Bitter Sweat brings you
close to the characters while compassionately exploring their positions.
Tough-minded yet humane, it is the rare kind of picture that can
address important issues without sacrificing stirring
emotions.
Hailed as the best drama in the history of Puerto Rican film, Bitter
Sweat is partly based on true-life events reported during the shutdown
of the Star Kist Caribbean Plant in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Then the
largest employer in the region, the U.S. owned facility was unexpectedly
shut down leaving thousands of workers unemployed and destroying the
local economy.
